WHO ARE YOU …….REALLY?
After just teaching another Masters NLP Certification I am always intrigued with the Symbolic Logic or the way we create a label or a meaning for a symbol. This is extremely important because our subconscious mind works with symbols.
Let’s look at one symbol…the equal (=) sign. I see this when coaching clients and in hearing general conversation on a daily basis. What part of our language represents that symbol? Let me give you some examples;
“I am unhappy” …I = unhappy. In other words “My whole identity (I) = unhappy”
My question would be “Are you unhappy all the time?” or “So you are always unhappy?” The reply is always “Oh No, I’m not unhappy all of the time”. My next question is “So when don’t you do unhappiness?” The answer is often “When I am at work OR when I am at home OR When I am out with friends” My response is then “OK Great, so you know you are MORE THAN unhappy don’t you?” Reply “Yes”. My next question is “So what else are you?” It is here that they find lots of other things that represent them that are positive and the first statement is no longer true.
You can now transfer this concept to work roles. In this economic climate where some people have been retrenched or many people are choosing to retire early, they may become a little confused as to who they are now. For many years they may have associated their identity to a position in the workforce, eg. “I am a CEO of a company”. When they retire they may be unsure as to who they really are now and many of these people become unhappy or depressed because, in their mind, they are no longer the CEO and therefore may associate that to losing their sense of recognition.
A POSSIBLE SOLUTION could be that we are always ourselves first. Eg I = Lynda Dyer. Being the director of Mind Power Global, An NLP Trainer, A great Coach, An Author, A Public Speaker, A Mother, A friend etc, is what I DO…..they are NOT who I AM or who I equal =.
So let’s get back to basics and look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself “Would I buy from me today? What are all the great things about you? What are the things you could work on to be, do and ultimately have more? Whatever you see in the mirror, you are ALWAYS more than that.
Help yourself and then help someone else today by allowing them to understand that they are ALWAYS more than what they think they are. What else are you?
